Summer is right around the corner.
It’s a time when vacations are taken, families spend extra time together and good weather allows for plenty of outdoor recreational activities. Whether you are single or have a family, military bases and communities have plenty of opportunities to offer this summer.
Your base Morale, Welfare and Recreation offers outdoor activities and special programs and is an excellent place to start if you are looking for something new to entertain yourself or your family this summer. Although MWR programs vary on specific installations, each MWR will provide a wide assortment of programs and opportunities including gardening and lawn equipment rental, camping equipment rental, kayak and boat rental, bowling alleys, golf courses, fitness and sports programs, as well as discounted tickets for performing arts tours and community events.
There are also a lot of opportunities offered around the country to benefit military personnel and their families during the summer months.
The National Parks and Federal Recreation Land Military Pass provides free, year-round access to national parks and federal recreational lands for active duty and most service members of the reserve and National Guard. The national parks offer picturesque landscapes and a variety of educational and recreational experiences including hiking and camping for all ages.
For a break from the heat, the Blue Star Museums program offers free admission to more than 2,000 participating museums from Memorial Day through Labor Day for all active duty, reserve and National Guard service members. Museums participating in this program include children, fine art, history and science, and nature centers.
There are even opportunities specifically for the little ones this summer. Department of Defense Summer Camp Experiences provide children with countless experiences to have fun, meet new people and develop skills. More than 30 adventure camps are offered to children ages 14-18 across the country. For more information visit the Military Teen Adventure Camps website.
No matter what your plans this summer, be sure to take advantage of the multiple opportunities offered specifically for military members. Remember, be safe this summer — and be sure to get out and have some fun!
