Military Appreciation Month: Spotlight on an Airman

by Staff Sgt. Luis Loza Gutierrez
319th Air Base Wing

Editor’s note: May is Military Appreciation Month, and we’ll highlight a different Airman and his or her job once per week for this month. We’re truly grateful for the hard work each Airman puts forth each day, and every job — big or small– contributes to the U.S. Air Force being the best Air Force in the world. Is there a military member you appreciate? Tell us in the comments below.

Master Sgt. Tomeka Parker, 319th Air Base Wing, Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota, is the director of equal opportunity and has been in the Air Force for almost 18 years.

Why is serving in the Air Force important to you?
Serving in the Air Force is important to me because it allows me to be a part of something that truly matters. In addition, the traits that make me who I am have been used to help others, which is something I truly value.

What moment or accomplishment as a Warrior of the North are you most proud of and why?
The accomplishment I’m most proud of is receiving the 2011 Air Force Equal Opportunity Director of the Year award. I worked very hard and never thought that I would be able to accomplish such a task.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Helping people is what I enjoy most about my job.

Who or what inspires you and why?
Retired Chief Master Sgt. Nate Turner is one of my inspirations. Although he is no longer in the Air Force, he’s still an awesome mentor and friend; he’s always believed in helping and molding others to reach their potential. He’s truly an example of what I aspire to be.

What’s the first thing that made you think Grand Forks Air Force Base was a cool place other than the temperature or weather?
To be honest, I didn’t think there was anything cool about Grand Forks Air Force Base upon receiving the assignment; however, I’ve met a lot of great people and made some good friends. Although it’s a small base, we have a great mission and get outstanding community support.
